Take The
Overtoom. It's a beautiful street, about 2 km long. It runs from the city
heart, the Leidseplein, to the Amstelveenseweg. It's history starts in the
14th century, when it was a small path connecting Sloten and the centre of
Amsterdam. Later famous for it's inn's, beautiful mansions,
recreation grounds, gardens, cotton industry and even fortresses.
Now it's a busy street, with a
tramway in the middle. Graffiti everywhere.
Most houses that we see now are
dating back fro the second half of the 19th century. But also modern
buildings mingle between. What makes the Overtoom so special nowadays is
the mix of many styles of buildings, the broad street and it's large green
trees bordering it.
Many owners try to renovate the
often neglected buildings, to restore them as much as possible into their
old glory.
But as it has always been in
history, one builds and the other destroys. What is created and kept with
much effort is thoughtlessly ruined by uninterested passers by.
Please have a look at these

Note of the Author: I am
writing Graffiti, but on the pictures shown you will mostly see the so
called TAGS. Not always is Graffiti ugly, as you can see on the picture
above. But for sure TAGS are dirty, destructive, not creative, not
artistic and definitely NOT wanted.
